Literacy
Literacy skills will improve, using the science of reading - a research based approach that explains how the brain learns to read.
GMP will follow the FNSB Literacy Strategic Plan consisting of 90 minutes of literacy and smaller-group intervention, as needed.

Numeracy
The main objective is to improve outcomes in Math. This means our students are engaged in their math lessons, both inside and outside of the classroom, and they can reach their learning goals.

Whole child
We situate the whole child as the foundation for our work as a school. A developmentally responsive approach is used in our interactions with each other. We value the whole child, and their family; their social, emotional, spiritual, academic and physical self. We honour children and their families and strive to ensure that we build community in our context. We value an understanding of our positionality within the school context, and in relationship to the land. Through reflective conversations, educators examine what they are bringing into interactions with students, and how this impacts their ability to respond to students’ needs.

Land & Language
We are working in collaboration with FNSB to include a First Nations worldview for all Learners. This will include prioritizing Southern Tutchone, seeking partnership to build an outdoor learning space, and increasing engagement from families in school activities.

Welcome to the Grey Mountain Primary School website! Thanks for visiting.
We are proud to be a primary school, specializing in Kindergarten through Grade 3 activities focusing on foundational literacy and numeracy principles. Our school motto, "Respect, Responsibility and Reaching for Our Best" reflects who we are. Students and staff are always encouraged and expected to treat each other with respect. Together we are growing and learning and reaching for our best.
Here at Grey Mountain Primary School, students enjoy a balanced curriculum which includes land-based activities, academics, structured literacy and numeracy based on the Science of Learning, arts, physical education and personal/social development. Students are supported in their learning through caring educators.

What makes FNSB schools different
Accountability
We take the words of past reports and the wisdom of our communities seriously. The Auditor General Reports of 2009 and 2019, the Joint Education Action Plan (JEAP), and the various reports from the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate (YCAO) have given us a clear map with checkpoints to ensure the needs of our Learners are met and our communities are heard and empowered. An overarching theme of these reports is accountability. You cannot have accountability without objective data and transparency.
Through our Yukon First Nation values, we have built all aspects of FNSB around this, especially how our schools operate and support our Learners' education. Everything from our school growth plans, to teacher evaluations, academic assessments, and the development of new data measures for cultural connection and belonging, FNSB is ensuring we are accountable to our Learners, families, First Nations, communities, and the public.
Together with local First Nations
We are changing what education looks like at Grey Mountain Primary School because local First Nation citizens are involved and leading everything from staffing and budgets to school rules and programming. Our school is a part of the community, not separate from it. Our Leadership Team includes education leaders from Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, and our localized governance model of Community Committees, made up of citizens and families, enables our community to genuinely share the delivery of public education.
High Expectations, High Support
Grey Mountain Primary School follows the BC Curriculum, and we work with Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council to integrate local knowledge, histories, languages, and cultures with high academic rigour. We know true learning engages minds by reflecting lived experiences and fostering a sense of belonging. Our community should maintain high expectations of our Learners, and the Educators and School Teams entrusted to teach them. In reciprocity, all Learners, Educators, and families are supported through a localized First Nations approach, which is strengths-based and wraps around the whole person, not only one aspect.

All Learners, Educators, and families are welcome at Grey Mountain Primary School. Every decision we make holds our Learners and families at the centre. We provide education grounded in reconciliation. A Yukon First Nations model puts the whole Learner first through a strengths-based and community-centred approach. We all hold the privilege and the responsibility to learn about and from the people, teachings, and languages of this land.
